When Ithaca College decided to implement a portal in the summer of 2007, our search for an out-of-the-box solution that would easily integrate with the school's existing systems ended without success. As a result, the decision was made to create our own custom lightweight portal solution that integrated our vast and varied environment. This brought together existing information sources and services like e-mail, campus calendaring, student self-service, news, blogs, targeted announcements, and content management, using current Web standards like XML, JSON, and Web Services. This presentation will review Ithaca College's approach to combining existing wide-spread information sources from on and off campus and the challenges we faced in reaching our goal.
