Web development at many institutions has tended to spring up from areas all over the organization chart. But at the same time, we as communicators need to present a unified and "branded" image to our constituents. At the University of Nebraska-Lincoln, we've built a community of Web developers, designers, communicators, and programmers, who share in issues of design, development and governance.
This presentation will deconstruct the UNL Web Developer Network, from its genesis as an informal gathering of Web developers, through its integral role in 2006 as the facilitator of a unified template policy for the university, to its (as of October) recent role in designing and developing the 2009 UNL.edu redesign. Part design, part coding, all politics: the UNL Web Developer Network (wdn.unl.edu)
First a designer in print media, then the university's first full-time Web developer, Robert now runs a department within UNL's University Communications office devoted to the Web and new media.
